An air traffic game for iPhone

Aerofield

Guide every plane home.

Draw a path with one finger and land every aircraft. A round starts calm and ends in controlled panic, and most rounds take two to five minutes.

Made for iPhone.

A round of Aerofield on the Harbor airfield at dawn. Two propeller planes follow dotted paths to the lit ends of two runways. The score and the wind are shown at the top.

How it plays

One finger, three steps.

There are no controls to learn. You draw, and the aircraft follow.

  1. Touch an aircraft

Put a finger on it. Every field it can land on lights up, and the others fade.

  2. Draw it home

Drag to a field that suits it and line up with the lit end of a runway. The aircraft lands by itself. Draw a new path any time to change your mind.

  3. Keep the sky clear

Aircraft keep arriving, faster and faster. Two that collide, or one that runs out of fuel, end the round.

Clear on purpose

You can always see where an aircraft can land.

Touch an aircraft and the fields it can use glow. Small painted symbols on every field show what lands there. Line up with a field that does not suit the aircraft and a small cross says so.

  • Harbor with a jet touched at the top. Both long runways have a blue glow, and the helipad and the water lane are faded.
Touch a jet: both long runways glow.
  • Harbor with a helicopter touched at the top. Only the helipad glows, in gold. The runways and the water lane are faded.
Touch a helicopter: only the helipad glows.
  • Highlands with a jet lined up with the short runway on the left. A small black tag with a white cross and a propeller plane symbol sits next to it.
A jet lined up with a short strip: a small cross and the symbol of what the strip is for.

The hints can be switched off in Settings. The painted symbols on the fields always stay.

Five aircraft

Each one asks for something different.

You can tell them apart by shape first and by colour second. Not every airfield sends every aircraft.

  • Propeller plane

    Small and steady.

    Any runway
  • Helicopter

Hovers while it waits. The wind does not bother it.

    Helipad
  • Jet

The fastest aircraft in the sky.

    Long runway
  • Heavy

Big and slow, and wide in the turns.

    Long runway
  • Seaplane

Lands on water, on a lane made for it.

    Water lane

Two things to watch

Wind and fuel.

Wind

The wind decides which end of each runway is lit, and when it shifts you get about five seconds of warning.

The top of the screen during a round: the score, and a wind chip with a dashed outline that says Wind shifts in 2.
The wind chip counts down before a shift.

Fuel

Every aircraft has a fuel ring that drains while it flies, so none of them can circle for ever.

Three airfields

Pick an afternoon.

The rules are the same everywhere. Each airfield changes the layout, the aircraft and one thing in the weather. Your best score is kept for each one.

  • The Harbor airfield at dawn: two runways, a helipad on the left and a water lane in a bay on the right.

    Harbor

    A calm place to learn

    • Gentle wind
    • Water lane
    • Two runways
  • The Highlands airfield at golden hour: one long runway, one short strip, two helipads and a small pond among hills and pine trees.

    Highlands

    High ground, gusty air

    • Gusts
    • Short strip
    • Many helicopters
  • The Storm Coast airfield under cloud: a runway on the shore, two water lanes in the sea, a helipad and two round storm cells.

    Storm Coast

    Weather rolls in fast

    • Storm cells
    • Two water lanes
    • Heavy aircraft

First light to night

The light moves while you play.

A round on Harbor starts at dawn and ends at night, so the round has a clock you can see.

  • Harbor at dawn, in pale green.

  • Harbor at dusk, in warm brown.

  • Harbor at night, in dark blue, with the runway edge lights on.
